What is a Kyphoplasty?
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive technique for treating vertebral compression fractures. Vertebral body fractures lead to the collapse or compression of a vertebra, causing the spine to curve forward or shorten and resulting in pain and/or a hunched-over deformity. The procedure in performed under fluoroscopic (x-ray) guidance where a special balloon is inserted into the fractured area of the vertebrae and inflated in order to lift the fracture and return compressed/collapsed piece into the correct location. A bone cement-like material is injected into the space made by the balloon in order to stabilize the bone and prevent further compression/collapse.
